John W. Chi
The John W. Chi Library, built and maintained in the memory of former student, John W. Chi, is the center of learning at Holt Senior High School. Thanks to donations from his parents, Holt residents Drs. Seong and Kiwhan Chi, the library was dedicated in the old high school, the current Junior High School, in the fall of 1978. In 2003, the Chi Memorial Library was moved to the new high school. Holt Public Schools is grateful to the Chi family for their initial and continuing support for the John W. Chi library.
John graduated first in his class from Holt High School in 1973, was a finalist in the Michigan Math Prize competition for two years, won an Honorary Regents Alumni Scholarship to the University of Michigan and won Holt’s Scholastic Medal for four straight years. He also won Holt’s Highest Citizen Award for four years, played varsity tennis during his senior year and was a talented writer.
John was not only a gifted student, he was also a philosopher who developed is personal ethic while he was a student at Holt. At the center of his own personal philosophy was the belief that death was a transition and the spirit continues to live on. John touched the lives of many in a deep and lasting way. His essence was love and he lovingly shared his talent and appreciation for the value of others who came into his life. It is therefore appropriate that his spirit continues to live on in this high school library where ideas and learning can be shared by everyone.
